Hi! I’m Dr. Andrew Chen and welcome to Marda Loop Braces! Having had crooked teeth myself, I also struggled with confidence and poor dental check ups. I never thought of it as a big deal before, but I found someone that I could trust, who explained to me all the benefits of orthodontic treatment, and now that I’ve experienced it, I feel great and I’ve never looked back! Having straight teeth and a healthy bite changed my life, but more importantly, it opened the doors for me to meet great people, just like you. I can’t wait to meet you and see what Marda Loop Braces can do for you.

Where were you born?

I was born and raised in Calgary, and I am a proud Calgarian and Canadian. GO FLAMES!

Where did you go to school?

I went to Mayland Heights for elementary, Branton Junior High for French Immersion, then was enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Sir Winston Churchill High School. After high school, I went to the University of Toronto and received a double major in Biology & Drama (always a good conversation starter!). Realizing that my true calling was in the Dental Sciences, I finished my 4 years with a degree in Human Biology from Toronto before pursuing a dental degree from the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. After graduating Magda Cum Laude with a DMD degree from their 4-year program, I decided to work as a dentist with Boston University’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program (AEGD) where I delivered dental services to the faculty and staff of Boston University. I then gained acceptance into Boston University’s Graduate Orthodontic Program under Dr. Anthony Gianelly, where I obtained a Master’s Degree in Orthodontics & Dento-Facial Orthopedics in 3 years. It’s quite a mouthful I know, but it was 12 years of schooling after high school to become an Orthodontist! And I’ve been practicing Orthodontics since 2004! It’s the Best Job Ever!

What job did you dream about when you were young?

Well, it’s going to sound corny, but I wanted to be a dentist even as a kid. I really enjoyed how nice my dentist and his staff were (shout out to Dr. Raymond Chiu!) and I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to convey that same trusting feeling to others, especially to kids that might be a bit fearful at first. Working with kids during my residency naturally drew me to Orthodontics. Also, I wanted to be an actor like Brad Pitt, but he kept on getting all the good roles…

Are you married? Do you have children?

I am happily married to the most wonderful woman in the world, who also helps me out at the office. Our most romantic outing was our engagement proposal, where I folded 1000 origami cranes which my friends hung up in a restaurant in order to be granted one wish, “to spend the rest of my life with you”. Though things went smoothly, I confess my whole body was shaking just minutes before the proposal!

I am also blessed to have 2 young daughters and they are both lovable rascals! I love how young children find joy in the simple things. This is still a time of wonder and I want it to last.

Favorite Foods?

I love poutine, sushi and really soft Chilean Sea Bass.

Have you ever had Braces or Invisalign before?

Funny you should ask that I’ve actually done both! My lower teeth were especially crooked and for the longest time I thought it was no big deal but I was always getting tartar buildup between my teeth. My dentist was concerned about my gum health so even though I was already a grown up, I decided to have braces on my bottom teeth. In fact, I did own orthodontic adjustments on myself! I even did Invisalign for my upper teeth as well so now I know exactly what all my patients go through! I guess that’s why I believe in Compassion, Patience and Positivity for all of my patients! I’ve been through it all too!

What hobbies do you have or had?

I’ve earned a black belt in Karate and I performed every year at the Kiwanis Music Festival in both Piano and Speech Arts when I was growing up.  One thing most people don’t know about me is that I was an in-line skater/rollerblader that did half-pipes and other tricks plus I had my own in-line skating T-shirt company when I was in my college years!

Nowadays, I dedicate my time to my patients at my orthodontic office. I love traveling, golfing, and reading. You’ll find me mountain biking in the summertime and skiing in the winter! See you on the slopes!

Would you ever skydive?

I’ve actually done this! Not by myself but tandem & with my best friend. Though heights is a small fear of mine, we enjoyed singing “Leaving on a Jet Plane” while we were going up.

Sky Diving is one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever done in my life. You literally say to yourself afterward, “If I can do this, I can do anything!”
