Myobrace

What is Myobrace?

Myobrace is a no-braces orthodontic approach to help to help guide your child’s teeth and jaw development. Treatment addresses the poor oral habits that can be the root cause of crooked teeth.

What is Myology and why does it lead to crooked teeth?

Myology is the study of the muscular system, including the study of the structure, function, and diseases of muscle. Oral myology is therefore the study of the structure and musculature of the mouth, which can be the underlying cause of the misalignment of teeth. For example, if the structure of the mouth is too small for the number of teeth, inevitably crowding will lead to misalignment of the teeth.

Does your child snore or struggle with open mouth breathing?

Here’s What You Need To Know

Myobrace is a treatment approach designed to address oral habits, including mouth breathing, tongue posture, and incorrect swallowing patterns in children. While Myobrace may be helpful in certain cases, its effectiveness in treating snoring or open mouth breathing may vary because open mouth breathing can have various underlying causes too, including anatomical factors (enlarged tonsils or adenoids) and nasal congestion, which may require different interventions.

If the underlying cause of your child’s snoring or open mouth breathing is related to oral habits or incorrect oral muscle function, Myobrace may help. By promoting correct tongue posture correct position, encouraging nasal breathing, and facilitating proper oral muscle coordination, it may contribute to resolving these issues.

However, it is crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional, such as an orthodontist, who can evaluate your child’s specific condition and provide appropriate recommendations for early treatment. We will consider various factors, including the cause of the snoring or open mouth breathing, the child’s age, and overall oral health, to determine whether Myobrace or alternative treatments would be most beneficial.

Remember that an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan are key to addressing your child’s specific needs effectively. So, discussing the potential role of Myobrace with a healthcare professional is essential before considering it as an intervention for snoring or open mouth breathing.

Arch development & benefits for children

Arch development is crucial for proper dental and facial development in children. The arch refers to the curved shape formed by the upper and lower dental arches, which house the teeth. Adequate arch development allows for sufficient space for the teeth to erupt in their correct positions, promoting a healthy bite and a harmonious facial structure.

Myobrace, as a treatment approach, aims to support arch development in children. By focusing on correcting oral habits and improving oral muscle function, Myobrace helps create an environment conducive to optimal arch development. Here are some key reasons why arch structure is important and how Myobrace can assist in additional arch development:

  1. Sufficient Space for Teeth: Proper mouth arch shape ensures there is enough space for the permanent teeth to emerge without crowding or misalignment. It helps prevent the need for extensive orthodontic interventions, such as tooth extraction or braces, by naturally accommodating the teeth within the jaw structure.
  2. Balanced Facial Structure: The arches contribute to the overall facial structure and symmetry. Well-developed arches provide a foundation for a balanced profile, proper jaw alignment, and optimal functioning of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This can positively impact facial aesthetics and help avoid potential TMJ disorders.
  3. Improved Bite Function: Correct oral development supports the establishment of a healthy bite. A well-aligned dental arch allows for proper occlusion (alignment of upper and lower teeth) and efficient chewing. This contributes to optimal digestion, reduces the risk of tooth wear, and promotes long-term oral health.
  4. Speech and Breathing Benefits: Proper arch growth plays a role in speech clarity and nasal breathing. A well-formed arch can enhance articulation and phonetic abilities. Additionally, Myobrace’s focus on correcting oral habits, such as breathing through the mouth, can facilitate a shift towards nasal breathing, which promotes better overall health and oxygenation.

By guiding children towards healthier oral habits and encouraging natural upper jaw development and lower jaw development, Myobrace aims to optimize the arch shape and create favorable conditions for the teeth to align correctly.

How does Myobrace treatment work?

Myobrace treatment involves using a series of appliances that have the proven dual function of correcting habits that cause poor dental development, while also providing light forces to align the teeth into their natural position. This technique is now used by practitioners in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Treatment does not involve wearing braces or using complex and uncomfortable dental appliances 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wearing a Myobrace appliance for one to two hours each day and overnight while sleeping, combined with a series of ‘myofunctional exercises’ (also known as the Trainer Activities) each day is all it takes for a real change to occur.

Myobrace FAQs

What is the best age to begin treatment?

The optimum time to begin treatment is when the patient is still growing and the first permanent teeth appear (at around six to ten years of age).

If poor myofunctional habits are discovered at an earlier age, it is best to start treatment immediately. Patients over 15 years of age can also be treated but the problems and habits causing the crooked teeth are often more difficult to change at this stage.

Myobrace FAQs

Will it work for me or my child?

The Myobrace System is a bit like a training program. Just like studying and playing sports, daily commitment and persistence are required to obtain the best results. It also depends on the patient’s inherent biology for change – therefore sometimes the results are rapid and other times it may take more perseverance. Old habits die hard, so the sooner the training program is implemented the better the growth benefits and the more permanent the result.

Myobrace FAQs

Will the treatment be painful?

No, but during the start of treatment, there may be a small amount of sensitivity around the gums and teeth as they get used to the new appliance. This sensitivity will cease to exist after a few days.

Myobrace FAQs

How much does Myobrace treatment cost?

Generally, the cost of Myobrace Treatment is comparable to braces, however, we can supply you with a fee structure. A cost estimate will be presented upon evaluation and consultation; however, treatment fees can vary depending on the number of visits required, the patient’s compliance with the appliance, how well the patient performs the activities prescribed to them, and how quickly the patient responds to the treatment. If treatment is started while the patient is younger, generally treatment will cost less than if it is left until later.

Myobrace FAQs

How often do I need to wear it?

The appliances must be worn daily for one to two hours plus overnight while sleeping. Along with wearing the appliance your Myobrace Practitioner may ask you to perform a few simple activities that re-train the oral muscles and help motivate the patient to improve their overall treatment outcome. More effort by the patient typically means a greater end result.
