iTero™ Digital Impressions for Comfort and Accuracy
About iTero
The iTero handheld wand takes a digital, 3D image of your prepared teeth, stopping as needed. You can look at the iTero 3D image on the screen in real-time. Now instead waiting for traditional putty impressions to the lab to be scanned, the digital image is electronically sent to the lab and is available in the Invisalign Clincheck system the next day.
The accuracy and detail of the iTero scan vs a putty impression is kind of like watching HDTV over standard definition TV. Plus, no goopy aftertaste! These digital scans don’t need to be rescanned so by removing the “clay modeling step” we have greatly improved the accuracy.

How does it work?
The iTero Digital Impressions system for orthodontics utilizes advanced imaging technology to create highly detailed and accurate digital impressions of a patient’s teeth and oral structures. This is a marked improvement from traditional dental impressions, which relied on patients biting down on a tray filled with a gooey substance, an experience often described as unpleasant or even disgusting.
The iTero system is composed of two main parts: a handheld wand and a station.
The wand is used to capture thousands of precise light scans of the patient’s mouth, with every tiny detail being recorded.
This data is then transmitted to the station, where it is processed and converted into a three-dimensional digital model of the patient’s mouth. These digital impressions can be stored for future reference, treatment planning, and even to track the progression of a patient’s orthodontic treatment over time.
The iTero scanner digitally captures the structure of the teeth and gums using the latest optical technology. The scanning process usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes, and it employs a radiation-free laser, ensuring patient safety.
